Please remember to exercise caution when exploring Nevada's Ghost Towns & Mining Camps. Open shafts, drifts going into mountainsides, and old buildings, are all DANGEROUS. Be aware of your surroundings, and let someone know where you are, especially if your plans change.

Melvin

DIRECTIONS: From Blaine, continue north for 10 miles. Then take a very sharp right (heading south) and follow for 0.5 mile to Monte Neva Hot Springs, site of Melvin.

"Melvin was a small camp that sprang up with the advent of the Nevada Northern Railroad. John Melvin built a small ranch at Monte Neva Hot Springs in early 1907. A post office, with Melvin as postmaster, opened on March 20, and a townsite was platted. The post office served nearby ranches and also the mining camp of Ruby Hill, across Steptoe Valley. Most of the freight destined for the camp came through the Melvin railroad siding. The post office closed on January 31, 1913, but Melvin continued as a successful ranch. The townsite was never needed, since Melvin didn't expand beyond the small-ranch stage. Today Melvin is one of many active ranches in Steptoe Valley."
