Please remember to exercise caution when exploring Nevada's Ghost Towns & Mining Camps. Open shafts, drifts going into mountainsides, and old buildings, are all DANGEROUS. Be aware of your surroundings, and let someone know where you are, especially if your plans change.

Lund

DIRECTIONS: From Ely, take U.S. 6 south and follow for 23.1 miles. Exit left onto Nevada 38 and follow for 11.9 miles to Lund.

"Lund grew out of the Tom Plane Ranch, established in 1873. Owned by a mine boss at Ward, the ranch was located on the Hamilton-Pioche stage line. The first flour mill in White Pine County was built in Lund in 1881 and run by a man named Withington. The group of first settlers included John L. Whipple, who later established Sunnyside (Nye County). A townsite was platted in 1898 and named after Anthony H. Lund, an early Mormon settler. The Mormon Church would become the driving force behind Lund and nearby Preston. A post office, with Bryant Ashby as postmaster, opened at Lund on August 27, located in the town office building. The following year, an old bunkhouse was converted into Lund's first schoolhouse. Hattie Rapheal served as the school teacher and continued to teach here for many years. Stores catering to local ranches opened, the most successful among them the Lund Mercantile Company, run by Dave Gardner, and a country store, run by Whipple and a man named Judd. Surprisingly, it wasn't until 1903 that the first church, a two-story log structure, was built. In 1908, a more substantial 30-foot-by-50-foot cement-block church was built. Henry Mathis and Merlin Peacock built the Pug Mill in 1907, which produced bricks not only for the Lund area but also for some of the nearby mining towns. In 1915 the Lund District was bonded and a new concrete school constructed, which was in turn replaced in 1931 by a new high school. Lund has continued to be a ranching town, never growing very large but maintaining a steady population of about 100. Buildings from Lund's early years remain."
