Please remember to exercise caution when exploring Nevada's Ghost Towns & Mining Camps. Open shafts, drifts going into mountainsides, and old buildings, are all DANGEROUS. Be aware of your surroundings, and let someone know where you are, especially if your plans change.

Manhattan

Location: From Tonopah head east on US 6 for 5.5 miles. Turn north on Nevada 376 for 33.7 miles. Turn east on Nevada 377 for 6.8 miles to Manhattan.

"Manhattan still has many old sites to explore today. In 1866 Silver was discovered and the Mohawk and the Blackhawk mines were open. By 1869 Manhattan was abandoned. Smaller mines continued to operate throughout the years and in 1905 a major gold discovery transformed a once abandoned town into a bustling community with a Post office, saloons, banks, stores, telegraph and telephone. In 1938 miners in Manhattan saw the construction of the Manhattan gold dredge. "

You can still see the remains from where the 3,000 ton dredge worked it's way from the base of the mountains toward town. Water was piped from across the valley floor from Pevine Creek. Manhattan has many more stories and the surrounding areas are some of this editors favorite places to explore.
