Please remember to exercise caution when exploring Nevada's Ghost Towns & Mining Camps. Open shafts, drifts going into mountainsides, and old buildings, are all DANGEROUS. Be aware of your surroundings, and let someone know where you are, especially if your plans change.

Telluride

DIRECTIONS: From Copper Canyon, head south for 0.75 mile. Exit right and follow this road for 1 mile. Bear right and continue for 3 miles to Telluride.

"Though the camp of Telluride didn't form until 1911, mining activity had taken place at the site in 1875. During that summer, the Battle Mountain Mining Company built a 30-ton concentrator, which processed ore from several Copper Canyon mines. The mill closed down in 1876, and the district was empty until 1910. In November, J. Hutchins discovered the Dollar Mine. He sold his find to Thomas Kearns, who organized the Dollar Mining Company. The mine was at an altitude of 7,500 feet, and its ore assayed as high as $500 per ton. A townsite was laid out in June and soon Telluride had a population of 50. Small buildings were put up, and a store and saloon opened. However, the distance and difficulty of access prevented the camp from further development. The mine was abandoned in 1912 and by summer Telluride had joined the ghosts. Only scattered rubble now marks the site."
