Please remember to exercise caution when exploring Nevada's Ghost Towns & Mining Camps. Open shafts, drifts going into mountainsides, and old buildings, are all DANGEROUS. Be aware of your surroundings, and let someone know where you are, especially if your plans change.

Burro

DIRECTIONS: From Grass Valley, head south on Nevada 306 for 7.5 miles. Exit right and follow for 2 miles to Burro.

"Burro was a small mining camp that sprang up during the spring of 1906. Anthony Dory located the Valley View Mine and served as postmaster when the office opened on July 19. A small camp of 25 formed, but the boom went bust before the end of the year. The later ore shipments never showed the same value as the first few tons, and the small ore pocket quickly vanished. Dory continued to work the mine, but everyone else left the camp. The post office closed on March 16, 1907, and Dory left soon after. The only activity after 1907 took place in 1932, when Gus Laurent worked nine claims near the Valley View Mine. After a few small shipments of quicksilver, Laurent gave up. The district has been abandoned ever since. Not much remains at Burro, only a couple of stone ruins, which are quite difficult to locate. To find the site, look for a small mine dump; the ruins are nearby."
