Please remember to exercise caution when exploring Nevada's Ghost Towns & Mining Camps. Open shafts, drifts going into mountainsides, old building, are all DANGEROUS. Be aware of your surroundings, and let someone know where you are, especially if your plans change.

AUSTIN

Located on U.S. Route 50, "The Loneliest Highway in America".

Austin is located on U.S. Route 50 almost in the center of the state. Silver was discovered in May 1862 and news of the rich ore quickly spread.

Today the town has a population close to 7000 and had banks, schools, churches and other businesses to support the miners. Many of the original building still stand, including Stokes Castle built in 1897.

This is an excellent town to visit. Even the gravemarkers in the town graveyard are fasinating.
