Please remember to exercise caution when exploring Nevada's Ghost Towns & Mining Camps. Open shafts, drifts going into mountainsides, and old buildings, are all DANGEROUS. Be aware of your surroundings, and let someone know where you are, especially if your plans change.

Tonkin

DIRECTIONS: From Bar, continue north for 10 miles to Tonkin.

"Tonkin was a small ranching settlement established just before the turn of the century. The ranch was locally important because of its post office. While Tonkin did not have a rich history, it did have a significant impact on the immediate area. For ranchers in nearby Denay Valley and miners working small mines in the area, Tonkin represented a link to family and friends. The post office opened on December 9, 1898, with John Tonkin as postmaster, and remained open until March 14, 1931. The ranch was taken over by the Damele family in 1906 and is still operating as part of their Dry Creek Ranch. Many of the original buildings remain, including the large ranch house. This is private property, so ask permission before wandering around the site."
