Please remember to exercise caution when exploring Nevada's Ghost Towns & Mining Camps. Open shafts, drifts going into mountainsides, and old buildings, are all DANGEROUS. Be aware of your surroundings, and let someone know where you are, especially if your plans change.

Prospect

DIRECTIONS: From Eureka, take U.S. 50 east for 1.5 miles. Exit right onto New York Canyon Road. Follow for 2.5 miles to Prospect.

"Prospect was a small settlement that formed in 1885, serving more or less as a residential camp for miners working in the nearby mining districts. While there were no prominent mines around the camp, a small producer was located on Prospect Mountain, overlooking the camp. A post office opened on March 3, 1893, with Earl Tremont as postmaster, to serve the 50 residents of Prospect. In 1908 a small smelter was built in Prospect, along with a couple of boardinghouses. The town boasted a saloon and a school. Supplies were brought here via thrice-weekly stage from Eureka. Once the mines near Prospect and along nearby Secret Canyon closed down, the camp quickly emptied. The post office closed on April 30, 1918, and soon the camp was abandoned for good. Several ruins remain in Prospect. Stone foundations and scattered wooden rubble mark the site. The ruins of the smelter, at the base of Prospect Mountain, are the most recognizable."
