If you've never participated in an open road racing event before, you are in for a treat. We race in speed classes starting at 95 MPH, going up every 5 MPH to 170 MPH. Cars race against the clock, with the object being to average your chosen target speed EXACTLY. you are allowed to bring some help along, in the form of a co-driver or "navigator," to guide you through the course and keep the time. The speed class you choose to enter will be partly determined by the amount of safety equipment on your vehicle - the more you have, the faster you will be allowed to go. All racers except the Unlimited Class are assigned a "Tech Speed" based on the safety equipment aboard their car. This speed is higher than the target speed you are aiming for, and you are not allowed to exceed this speed for any reason. For example, if you are in the 120 MPH class, your tech speed will be 140 MPH. If you want to go faster, you must upgrade the safety equipment in your car.

Frequently asked questions about OPEN ROAD RACING

Q. What exactly is Open Road Racing?

A. Open Road Racing is a high-speed automotive rally event held on closed highways from 50 to 84 miles in length. Cars compete in solo runs against the clock in speed classes ranging from 95 MPH to 170 MPH, with the objective being to average your target speed EXACTLY. There is also an Unlimited class for full-out racing cars, who try to be the fastest down the course. These ultra-fast cars have reached speeds of nearly 230 MPH on the straightaway! You can race by yourself, or share the fun with a co-driver or navigator to help keep the time and watch the course notes.

Q. Is this really legal?

A. Absolutely! These events are sanctioned by the Nevada Department of Transportation and by the counties in which the events are held. Local law enforcement is present to maintain the integrity of the closed course and keep the racers safe.

Q. How fast can I go?

A. The speed class you are allowed to enter is based on your experience level and the safety equipment on your car. Generally, the more safety equipment you car is equipped with, the faster you will be allowed to go. Each speed class is restricted by a "Technical Speed," which the cars in that class are not allowed to exceed for any reason. For example, if you are racing in the 120 MPH class, your Technical Speed is 140 MPH. All classes will have a Technical Speed of at least 15 MPH above their target speed, to allow them to achieve their average speed easily.

Q. What kind of cars may enter?

A. Practically any 4-wheeled vehicle is eligible, with some restrictions on open-cockpit cars. Past entries have included Corvettes, Mustangs, Camaro, Vipers, Winston Cup Race Cars, Panteras, and various Exotics. If it goes fast, it can probably race!

Q. Is it expensive?

A. Entry fees range from $300 to $500, with some additional fees for a co-driver or navigator, and the use of the practice road before the race. Membership in the MKM Racing Club (required by the Nevada Department of Transportation) costs $50/year, or $75/year for a family membership. Lifetime memberships are also available for $200, which earns you a lifetime car number and preferred reservations for the events.

Q. Do I need a racing license?

A. No. You are allowed to enter the lower speed classes without previous racing experience after completing a short classroom session and qualifying on the practice road with an experienced instructor. If you wish to race in the higher speed classes, you must have previous Open Road Racing experience or a racing license. However, many of our regular racers have "come up through the ranks" of the lower speed classes and are now racing in the highest speed classes!

Q. Are spectators allowed?

A. There are no spectator areas set up; however, it is possible to watch the race from the several checkpoints along the course. The best way to watch the race is to become a course worker, stationed all along the course to maintain the safety of the course. As a course worker, you will watch the racers come right by your position on the course. To volunteer as a course worker, click here.

Q. How do I sign up?

A. Download and complete the MKM Membership Form on this website, and mail it in. After becoming a member, we will send you the race materials you need to enter our events.

Q. How can I book accommodations for the race weekend?

A. The Host Hotels are linked from MKM's WEBSITE. Click on them and view their accommodations. They also offer a special rate to MKM members.

Q. Where can I find out more information on the rules and regulations?

A. On MKM's WEBSITE you can review the rules online, or download them in Adobe or Word format for later reading.
