Jarbidge, Nevada

From Charleston, continue north for 18 miles to Jarbidge. This road is often closed till June and is very steep. Trailers are not advised this route. From the East take Hwy. 93 to Rogerson, Idaho. Go West on Rogerson / Three Creek Rd. for 64 miles, the last 13 miles of which are unpaved. This is the preferred route for motor homes and trailers.

"Jarbidge was Nevada's last big boomtown, but long before the white man made the canyon prosper, the area was rich with Shoshone legends. For the Shoshone, the canyon was the forbidden home of Tasu-hau-bitts, a man-eating giant that roamed the mountains snatching up helpless Shoshones and returning to the canyon to eat them.

While the discoveries that were to establish Jarbidge did not take place until after the turn of the century, may prospectors unsuccessfully explored the canyon prior to that time. The first group came through in the 1860s and spent a month gold panning the river but found nothing promising. In the 1880s another prospecting party gave rise to one of Jarbidge's most enduring legends, the legend of the lost sheepherder. The story was born when a man named Ross found a rich ledge high on the mountain above the canyon floor. Ross told a sheepherder named Ishman about the discovery and died soon afterwards. While leading his boss, John Pence, back to the canyon Ishman died of cerebral hemorrhage. Pence continued searching for the mine that, as legend had it, a skeleton guarded, armed with a pick and rifle. Many who later discovered mines claimed that their was the Lost Sheepherder mine."

" The town of Jarbidge has survived ad is now a popular hunting, fishing, and camping spot. The scenery in and around Jarbidge is a big draw. Many original buildings, including the jail still stand. The huge foundations of the Elkoro mill are just off Main Street. The Bluster mill, south of Jarbidge, was virtually complete until partially collapsing a couple of years ago. A cemetery is just north of town."
