The
devastating fires that occurred this summer in Northern Nevada
have left wildlife and their habitat in dire straits.
What
can you do to HELP?
Volunteer
to join the Nevada Division of Wildlife in a habitat restoration
effort designed to gather wild range land shrub seed to be used
in re-vegetation efforts this fall and winter. Time is of the
essence! NDOW sponsored seed collection efforts will be conducted
in the Reno, Carson and Gardnerville areas on Saturdays starting
October 16 and continuing October 23, Nov. 6 and 13, or until
the snow flies. Seed collection will also occur near Tonopah on
Saturday, November 6.
Seed
collection is EASY and with a few friends it will be FUN, and
most importantly it will HELP restore vital wildlife habitat.
Bring some light leather gloves, boots, sun screen, and an extra
layer of clothing in case it is cool all day. Water, lunch, and
soft drinks will be provided each day. Transportation will be
provided, leaving from the NDOW office on Valley Road in Reno
each Saturday at 9 a.m. Specific information on locations will
be made available shortly, so if you live near the seed collection
site, you can meet us there.
For
seed collection efforts in the Reno area, call Volunteer Coordinator
Kim Toulouse, or Doug Hunt of the Habitat Bureau, at (775) 688-1500
to sign up for one or more weekends. Sign ups are essential so
that adequate food and equipment can be provided.
For
seed collection near Tonopah, call Teri Slatauski, Habitat biologist
at (775) 482-3153.
